Martin Luther King , Jr.
Martin Luther King , Jr.
The principal leader in the civil rights movement in the U.S. and a fervent advocate of nonviolent protest, Martin Luther King, Jr. challenged segregation and racial discrimination on many fronts. His yearlong boycott of segregated buses in Alabama helped him gain national notoriety. His now famous “I Have a Dream Speech” drew more than 200,000 civil rights supporters and helped create the political momentum needed to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, King dedicated his life to ending poverty and ridding the country of its segregationist practices. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
